But, actually, there wasn't much to report. The electrical opening for the trunklatch is inoperable since several months. Even another release motor couldn't fix that - but as long as the latch works with the key cylinder, that's fine for me. Then, in January I received a blurry picture from a speed trap. 25€ wasn't a big deal, it just bothered me, because I know exactly the location of the speed trap and I pass by it every single day - I must have been still asleep or something...</div><div><br /></div><div>Then, finally some work was done to the Porsche. One of the pre-owners decided to mount an antenna for a cell phone, most probably in the early 90's, when it was "the thing" to have cell phone in the car. The antenna is long gone and left a gaping hole, which I covered with an Alpin white painted plug, but when I did that, when I initially "resurrected" the car, I already noticed some rust and bubbling paint in that area of the roof. It got worse in the last years, this is how it looked like a few weeks ago:</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvXN1Xk13nkS31LeYisxbwRuAlkgIHWBGclaAYprLw3yQerye96qaFL37tndXvpPkgDd3G-IljZE4a7biWnk74Dx2h5Eh04RwGWAN38EuHcjRfkwKXm6EkGdSOpbATX1OAGpW6fOCY7Tc/s3968/IMG_20200530_114912.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; In January 2019 I changed the oil in the transaxle gearbox. I am not really sure, but most probably for the first time ever!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Coincidentally, it was exact at 269.000 km on the odometer</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMjKtBxt9Ia8ILAG_NA90Ds-PGZH9ebhgMy8iDAySC5Q9bXB5DRoZfO5CCOx_2yReey3ulKMyMEH5RRwaqhy8Ub-Z6-87hyphenhyphenUf3u7IibVoImtNOYQJ-viV9e4yZAB6bmdHVdH8qyGKEyV4/s1600/IMG_20190106_114824_686.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1080" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMjKtBxt9Ia8ILAG_NA90Ds-PGZH9ebhgMy8iDAySC5Q9bXB5DRoZfO5CCOx_2yReey3ulKMyMEH5RRwaqhy8Ub-Z6-87hyphenhyphenUf3u7IibVoImtNOYQJ-viV9e4yZAB6bmdHVdH8qyGKEyV4/s640/IMG_20190106_114824_686.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The biggest challenge were the drain plugs, they were rusted solid with the transaxle housing and took a lot of time and the use of numerous swear words before they were removed. The old oil was drained and a new drain plug was mounted, then the good stuff was filled in:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiW8z4emEMbjtRrdFDjHAZ2jsbBXah9QgnX32gAQJT788qvX4vbjknaTSxa-37jWTLsMMYaToImH9-iNzP4nD2nxPbnsjaoGnSsJX5vZxlLkbIwLjSevfXfBGVE11ap5KLwfWlW3YoBUU/s1600/IMG_20190106_114824_687.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1080" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiW8z4emEMbjtRrdFDjHAZ2jsbBXah9QgnX32gAQJT788qvX4vbjknaTSxa-37jWTLsMMYaToImH9-iNzP4nD2nxPbnsjaoGnSsJX5vZxlLkbIwLjSevfXfBGVE11ap5KLwfWlW3YoBUU/s640/IMG_20190106_114824_687.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Finally another new plug, fresh from the VW dealer was mounted to finish the job:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQ_t4sNEAjvZjyuji2QKPnhEIHtJaAO31ud-rDYFvfp6ow2J3a3bY4H_0XoKtRkKSS7mp8bqD6JKpD5Bn9t6WYMN_czT2cpuGPC8IpnG9eKmD-W8aJd5nopNM6mnQYXNcJvdsgG0r-sX8/s1600/IMG_20181229_140052.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQ_t4sNEAjvZjyuji2QKPnhEIHtJaAO31ud-rDYFvfp6ow2J3a3bY4H_0XoKtRkKSS7mp8bqD6JKpD5Bn9t6WYMN_czT2cpuGPC8IpnG9eKmD-W8aJd5nopNM6mnQYXNcJvdsgG0r-sX8/s640/IMG_20181229_140052.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
In August 2018 I repaired the Targa roof levers. The hinges were broken and the screws were rusty:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3HTEBjNfrmW9V5mEk79UFZ4RlMJ_0O68Xa1Ivufv0WDU3NJbNQyzPkyoVCxZ24hWh-tuQfFLbDi-_Dba8-lBT8nL36XC1tr5w0zF9WOldkOQTeGvLlENXt8-sw0MhBfFSDW3R-4cUdXs/s1600/IMG_20180801_153808.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3HTEBjNfrmW9V5mEk79UFZ4RlMJ_0O68Xa1Ivufv0WDU3NJbNQyzPkyoVCxZ24hWh-tuQfFLbDi-_Dba8-lBT8nL36XC1tr5w0zF9WOldkOQTeGvLlENXt8-sw0MhBfFSDW3R-4cUdXs/s640/IMG_20180801_153808.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
I bought all required parts at the Porsche dealer - once more, much cheaper than advertised on ebay!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJHnBpCCFTw5Cym1YBRkaY6uhbLN0jH9AeBYfI0NuGHrg2vE1iklnxPhvifgJOBN0vghBkv9ol-_Teu4gGOhEsyNPfOxmxQOkryyZejVxbL2ZaQY0CQ79dFDx0-ZcXVy8Cu572biMOeTU/s1600/IMG_20180801_153903.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJHnBpCCFTw5Cym1YBRkaY6uhbLN0jH9AeBYfI0NuGHrg2vE1iklnxPhvifgJOBN0vghBkv9ol-_Teu4gGOhEsyNPfOxmxQOkryyZejVxbL2ZaQY0CQ79dFDx0-ZcXVy8Cu572biMOeTU/s640/IMG_20180801_153903.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
The pins had to be pushed out, the levers themselves were fine, so they could be re-used on the new hinges, as well as the pins: <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4EQiF5YodfqVTRalmifkDCelvFAdqnvW9CHw4bMeYP3yFWAurjp6mGPOlpOFg9LFCSewsRLKFyEcCyLSNbBjoeH1aeYu0S3OySSQhkjU4aOARQWdGHtgyfSeNAw1VHqCFoNFu_Qt2NRQ/s1600/IMG_20180801_154211.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4EQiF5YodfqVTRalmifkDCelvFAdqnvW9CHw4bMeYP3yFWAurjp6mGPOlpOFg9LFCSewsRLKFyEcCyLSNbBjoeH1aeYu0S3OySSQhkjU4aOARQWdGHtgyfSeNAw1VHqCFoNFu_Qt2NRQ/s640/IMG_20180801_154211.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
All it takes is a good pair of pliers:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaWnVNgK5hZPGzboMj8Rk33N-9wP9CXxfim3AyNmRnZShy6tfJMicwQkVVrp3IzFLvwA2HwvHY03cz33PvRbSItkV4YVNq39ycFIMnhqR2NM1zreBi8FNhd4iituo0N8FRx25FRAVFgDY/s1600/IMG_20180801_154351.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaWnVNgK5hZPGzboMj8Rk33N-9wP9CXxfim3AyNmRnZShy6tfJMicwQkVVrp3IzFLvwA2HwvHY03cz33PvRbSItkV4YVNq39ycFIMnhqR2NM1zreBi8FNhd4iituo0N8FRx25FRAVFgDY/s640/IMG_20180801_154351.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
Final result, working hinges with new, shiney screws:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

But the TÜV sticker clearly stated that 2 years passed and a new inspection was required. As I had to update the paperwork anyways (legalizing the new wheels + tyres + front springs) I took care of this today. The result is another 2 years of road worthiness with no advise or issues:<br />

I will update the latest modifications I added to the 944 as well as some general updates of Porsche related stuff from time to time.<br />

Here is already the most obvious mod: A set of Maxilite 7+8x16 wheels in the classic Fuchs design, with original center caps. The lips are fully polished instead of the standard "machined" surface. It looks really great, but it is a nightmare to keep them clean and shiny.<br />

On my way to work the pedal slipped down and didn't came back. Luckily, there was a little fluid left so I was able to shift the gears and ride the car to work. I called a friend who brought along some brake fluid to top up the tank for the way home. That worked o.k., so I managed to drive the Porsche back home without harm to the gearbox.<br />
When I checked from below the vehicle, an already familiar failure was obvious:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Hydraulic fluid from the slave cylinder on the clutch fork...<br />
<br />
This time, I wasn't interested in yet another cylinder repair, I ordered a new one. While I was at it I noticed that one of the contact points on the starter motor was broken, too. Somebody messed with it already, as there some traces of silicone and bodged repairs...<br />

There is a lot of current running through these wires and I am not keen to see the car bursting into flames - This had to be fixed, now!<br />
A new starter costs ~300 € - but the starter itself was working perfect, only the starter magnet was bad. Luckily I found a new replacement starter magnet for 30 €. The repair was a little tricky because someone has been here before:<br />

All contact points are exactly the same, fitment is perfect, the only difference is a Philips screw instead of a 8 mm hex nut to attach the starter signal cable. Time will tell how good it works...<br />
<br />
Now on to the clutch cylinder story: The repair set from Porsche was definitely o.k. - I guess it was me who messed up. The inner surface of the old cylinder just wasn't clean and smooth enough, before I re-assembled the service kit. It only took 6 month to wear out the new seal. This time I ordered a brand new cylinder:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYCNMFHg6ouLuwQsZx6QtebmOpTHktCbKhyphenhyphenUqUkhPKQKcx97gQv8OxaKlqw-i_bxlTYQt7dMYRx3oe9zTXWuP1Roep-HUPiO3FRKYbMYNUNxqlo0pHJ_5i0KpF_xS96yUbf8G2rDDUMaA/s1600/IMG_20180420_152911.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYCNMFHg6ouLuwQsZx6QtebmOpTHktCbKhyphenhyphenUqUkhPKQKcx97gQv8OxaKlqw-i_bxlTYQt7dMYRx3oe9zTXWuP1Roep-HUPiO3FRKYbMYNUNxqlo0pHJ_5i0KpF_xS96yUbf8G2rDDUMaA/s640/IMG_20180420_152911.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>

Here it is, already assembled to the clutch bell housing. <br />

Bleeding the system was a little tricky, but now the clutch and starter a fine again!<br />

Today we finally found the issue with the front struts! After countless strip down and reassembly sessions of the front struts, we found the mistake - which <u>I made during assembly</u>! When you go back to the beginnings of this blog, you might find this picture - the root of all evil!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyqn6fgyVwyN8ePtHA0j_gmNSizaLPjm5vWBONeyMdUIOZCeYTtvwQ2liTX4judWN6vv9hBuzMVoRrNBeizoQZ3yR2Bh5wanAKVAhHHBPcUcwHobqgY4K_Cz1i_mapPYnJKZzQp3LNHUc/s1600/GEDC1687.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyqn6fgyVwyN8ePtHA0j_gmNSizaLPjm5vWBONeyMdUIOZCeYTtvwQ2liTX4judWN6vv9hBuzMVoRrNBeizoQZ3yR2Bh5wanAKVAhHHBPcUcwHobqgY4K_Cz1i_mapPYnJKZzQp3LNHUc/s640/GEDC1687.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
In an attempt to do only the best for my new shock absorber cartridges, I used an "old trick" and filled the strut with oil to cool the strut... BIG mistake!!!!<br />
The trick was used in the olden days, when oil pressured shocks were used. The Bilstein inserts are gas filled cartridges. There is a valve in the bottom of the cartridge which "breathes", depending on the movements of the shock absorber. Now, what happened and how did I found out?<br />
When I took the strut apart today, I told my buddy to be careful, cause the strut is oil filled. When we poured the oil, it was almost nothing left of the initial 100 ml I inserted, maybe 10 ml only?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgk-8XU36FWdp6skNSjzgwTl8Vh8wnr63f5140QrAfyF5yG-wr4rcSqzGlttpWpAeqaWdrXlCPmSETYwZ4SSKAVoln1JYK2vqtGsWvCZRPSjsDpwYqgs39Gbpnx8g_xAIgHVDO2IMVPirA/s1600/IMG_20180217_142928.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgk-8XU36FWdp6skNSjzgwTl8Vh8wnr63f5140QrAfyF5yG-wr4rcSqzGlttpWpAeqaWdrXlCPmSETYwZ4SSKAVoln1JYK2vqtGsWvCZRPSjsDpwYqgs39Gbpnx8g_xAIgHVDO2IMVPirA/s640/IMG_20180217_142928.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
Then I tried to compress the cartridge all the way to full droop. I was irritated by the fact that it only worked about half way, then was totally blocked...<br />
Here is the reason why, the valve basically sucked in all the oil, which then acted like a hard stop. So, the strut actually bottomed out on every pot hole and gave a harsh impact to the body!<br />
Then we inserted the cartridge upside down in a bench press and tried to gently push the oil out:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpO9Vh9A_i41rzvt4gliVf1uSAWw1RC4Kr913c17UZPaEJ8K40mkE_N6quCoWHMBHO93VybLn9oNL_07c8_MPwFAyG_xoQBZAteNLw2ZWWJhXGdT8qJHC6niNxzeBPT2UOaR_pulrsXZ8/s1600/IMG_20180217_113516.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpO9Vh9A_i41rzvt4gliVf1uSAWw1RC4Kr913c17UZPaEJ8K40mkE_N6quCoWHMBHO93VybLn9oNL_07c8_MPwFAyG_xoQBZAteNLw2ZWWJhXGdT8qJHC6niNxzeBPT2UOaR_pulrsXZ8/s640/IMG_20180217_113516.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
after a while it started to bleed, then we gradually added more pressure:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgC98m-xMHyNUrB6Byrk36W7SWFoeOAWYbwEcUzUqx8gdKcTBG_ZSfoSBWwCC_my5KtrSGznCzdX3NlIJlHmouQ0tKh2YLtY261p4jfFRUBFAP_zprMzfjXBYjVoumIKS60X36_UfwRxIY/s1600/IMG_20180217_113511.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgC98m-xMHyNUrB6Byrk36W7SWFoeOAWYbwEcUzUqx8gdKcTBG_ZSfoSBWwCC_my5KtrSGznCzdX3NlIJlHmouQ0tKh2YLtY261p4jfFRUBFAP_zprMzfjXBYjVoumIKS60X36_UfwRxIY/s640/IMG_20180217_113511.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
You can see the oil pour down alongside the piston rod! Slowly but surely, it all drained out - but: is this thing still in perfect order, after all that oil ran through it's gutts? I wasn't convinced, so a trip to <a href="https://www.mittelmotor.de/cms/de/">Mittelmotor</a> was required to buy another pair of inserts, this time B6 Sport - a hair stiffer than the standard B6.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqnbrQTM8iORSoNExlOhQ6BGf_bFm7y_HAiHfMvZJXr1GuFgQr9YdbkGdqqUMEjO4DybIBYl2UIYvSP5sXjJPQwdQ2H8x-FLaeTMJcwt2CCyWf3kMclX6YzQvxA5JPs6QGG_HLj1vyfOo/s1600/IMG_20180217_135021.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqnbrQTM8iORSoNExlOhQ6BGf_bFm7y_HAiHfMvZJXr1GuFgQr9YdbkGdqqUMEjO4DybIBYl2UIYvSP5sXjJPQwdQ2H8x-FLaeTMJcwt2CCyWf3kMclX6YzQvxA5JPs6QGG_HLj1vyfOo/s640/IMG_20180217_135021.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
Interestingly enough, on the left strut the oil was still in the strut - I don't know if this insert wasn't o.k. and for whatever reason the valve didn't work - or maybe it wasn't that much stressed, as most of the pot holes are on the right side of the street. Nevertheless, we exchanged both struts.<br />
Now, finally everything works well. I hope it stays this way. Happy days!Volkswrencherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03558501978179773996noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7656965393415999628.post-69793560137825646972018-02-12T19:40:00.002+01:002018-02-12T19:40:55.124+01:00Sealing a seal?!When I purchased a new hatch seal, I was fully aware of the fact that it had to be installed using a sealant in the clamp-on channel which attaches to the body. This is also what the website of kyle, <a href="http://www.only 944.com">only 944.com</a> makes very clear. I was a bit lazy and gave it a try without sealant. To no surprise water ingressed into the boot, due to the capillary effect of water creeping virtually everywhere.<br />
So I bought a cartridge with an elastic sealer and applied it today:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-o8DDZmVpAQMIu8MZl__Esb1aBYWv1HAEieWhXymcaUOAS7W33gmu9RjUjxB-VCUT7BrzL3h7SNRNbgDklqgiHNdRsaNrr6P2D6qEwtkOOitQVJQNgDJofyQ3juAaZLVrKTi8jW8Z_2I/s1600/P1050474.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-o8DDZmVpAQMIu8MZl__Esb1aBYWv1HAEieWhXymcaUOAS7W33gmu9RjUjxB-VCUT7BrzL3h7SNRNbgDklqgiHNdRsaNrr6P2D6qEwtkOOitQVJQNgDJofyQ3juAaZLVrKTi8jW8Z_2I/s640/P1050474.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
This shall do the trick!<br />
While I was in the garage with the heater working, I also applied a light tint to the back-up lights:<br />

It is a self-adhesive foil which can be removed, when I want to backdate the Porsche again later!Volkswrencherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03558501978179773996noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7656965393415999628.post-6876622819322495532018-01-06T19:55:00.000+01:002018-01-06T19:55:56.606+01:00A nerve wrecking job...I managed to attach the Porsche script onto the back - which is a nerve wrecking job. I measured and adjusted the 2-piece sticker for almost 2 hours, before I finally attached it! A special thank you goes out to my friend Rui, which allowed me to use his hoist - otherwise this job is almost impossible to achieve!<br />
<br />
First I marked the center of the vehicle and the center of the sticker, then I attached a few strips of tape in the center and below the tail lights to mark the perfect height (these mark ups have to be in an area <u>between</u> the individual pieces of the sticker): <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVViuQc0x4TMIvtCTJmcRtKKN-cK4R3N6iCM64DR1OtBpUiXz5B1hI18ymv-2k-XIF0jIek5CkDkBpQALR5Bg88FUvWtptamIGx6mvSF0j4xlsWgezoWlWi_KoFvdHjVEoJ39UaCOWmCY/s1600/20180102_144048.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVViuQc0x4TMIvtCTJmcRtKKN-cK4R3N6iCM64DR1OtBpUiXz5B1hI18ymv-2k-XIF0jIek5CkDkBpQALR5Bg88FUvWtptamIGx6mvSF0j4xlsWgezoWlWi_KoFvdHjVEoJ39UaCOWmCY/s640/20180102_144048.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
On the upper protective layer of the sticker I marked the upper and lower edge of the text, then I cut away some bits of the protective layer in those marked areas, so I was able to adjust it perfectly right:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiyVXi2iGtnrLLbUW0Zt2tj0DKsAI-4JdKXu7F-Bb04pu6IML_11pya74lJmc2bU2dTtM2iF7bfFdLAU5mwOAJ16AyMB0jJSksbUMYykXaPI7blrJe9Pl_wX4ZE93lPiE3MWXygwoaX5A/s1600/20180102_145737.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiyVXi2iGtnrLLbUW0Zt2tj0DKsAI-4JdKXu7F-Bb04pu6IML_11pya74lJmc2bU2dTtM2iF7bfFdLAU5mwOAJ16AyMB0jJSksbUMYykXaPI7blrJe9Pl_wX4ZE93lPiE3MWXygwoaX5A/s640/20180102_145737.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Marking and lines are matching... <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXt1WCjM_QRH_f1ikEr-aTeJG2a9xWOhlmzul_Wjofn_T3mWG_Y0BA-MXfj27qB6o1_cDdc0nGAMO6szXPeBhhN5ClUaObYAPQGF82U-xvbBB5lA28ri0m-XnTP6N5en7mlMZP5nAZBK8/s1600/20180102_145744.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXt1WCjM_QRH_f1ikEr-aTeJG2a9xWOhlmzul_Wjofn_T3mWG_Y0BA-MXfj27qB6o1_cDdc0nGAMO6szXPeBhhN5ClUaObYAPQGF82U-xvbBB5lA28ri0m-XnTP6N5en7mlMZP5nAZBK8/s640/20180102_145744.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
.. on both sides: <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzIZoR9FpXi8Y9gxDoXLV2Jiu4i8KeR6QDe6JXtJstTVvaty9GQPcDyxmefsPsNywa7REfxOfxXLowh66gxpb-we5WPZYbyKoJxihmsCQmSC9Ip2quX2Jn1JyKvyZDert6jbQ5SSrJCMM/s1600/20180102_145750.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzIZoR9FpXi8Y9gxDoXLV2Jiu4i8KeR6QDe6JXtJstTVvaty9GQPcDyxmefsPsNywa7REfxOfxXLowh66gxpb-we5WPZYbyKoJxihmsCQmSC9Ip2quX2Jn1JyKvyZDert6jbQ5SSrJCMM/s640/20180102_145750.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Then it was time to take a deep breath and finally attach it, this is the result:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_d746NC3Qefr6nkpaGf_qDJ2McA6LF48lZffYbQhF3AWh_Wei1pUFBbBF2Kgj9p-ZD-Fy9bCtTmsN69cvnMTjP7huGAdhM1Cz9jXJ3j50Gw2Rq7PQXn__tXcCEAS0ZROQ3hfyG-PZjZI/s1600/20180106_174924.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1076" data-original-width="1600" height="430" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_d746NC3Qefr6nkpaGf_qDJ2McA6LF48lZffYbQhF3AWh_Wei1pUFBbBF2Kgj9p-ZD-Fy9bCtTmsN69cvnMTjP7huGAdhM1Cz9jXJ3j50Gw2Rq7PQXn__tXcCEAS0ZROQ3hfyG-PZjZI/s640/20180106_174924.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I Also bought some 3M Scotchcal adhesive to black out the area between the tail lights:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKeb84fOtCYHldbFqOu6k6EV8W0NVeskZFL78H9hlasZsxRWJp7GN3iowdNUhcWKlL2CIrCKiqjPZWfnRIQann5wgb6TeUNKIZYok3OvSRn-JwUzk5tLyWKX94beymkD8BDvDbdOBFnAI/s1600/20180106_174957.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="980" data-original-width="1600" height="392" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKeb84fOtCYHldbFqOu6k6EV8W0NVeskZFL78H9hlasZsxRWJp7GN3iowdNUhcWKlL2CIrCKiqjPZWfnRIQann5wgb6TeUNKIZYok3OvSRn-JwUzk5tLyWKX94beymkD8BDvDbdOBFnAI/s640/20180106_174957.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
and here is the direct comparison:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoz0WQvdFYKBz5pA60NPHLy1LCFmwcKeLcxvThwkXvT6zshy3sRosO4pRCbniX_OwwAzWGafgQZWpXbDLr2e9ubpkA-5W1vTH7X6ngZKrDdMKq-miLVkRK39A7IiryloS1lqfdooNYHuM/s1600/IMG_20180106_175333_862.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1564" data-original-width="1564" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoz0WQvdFYKBz5pA60NPHLy1LCFmwcKeLcxvThwkXvT6zshy3sRosO4pRCbniX_OwwAzWGafgQZWpXbDLr2e9ubpkA-5W1vTH7X6ngZKrDdMKq-miLVkRK39A7IiryloS1lqfdooNYHuM/s640/IMG_20180106_175333_862.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I like the contrast, it makes the rear look wider and less boring :-)<br />
<br />
Currently I think about a black 3M gravel guard sticker on the rear fenders, similar to those:<br />
(Picture found on strongauto.net!) <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Those guys did a great job:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYqoj7PF9D-yoUsH8O64leHT8y-MrRMfLOmzw6ZlNQ3M9zaLCT7fVNk_XUx4T3EPzxPW85a-maUZnyOoz2S1FBOfezi7PIuToloEnk1BOdRNcIW2hjvKSz1Y3xwm01GrSRYKfDEWFneLQ/s1600/P1050424.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYqoj7PF9D-yoUsH8O64leHT8y-MrRMfLOmzw6ZlNQ3M9zaLCT7fVNk_XUx4T3EPzxPW85a-maUZnyOoz2S1FBOfezi7PIuToloEnk1BOdRNcIW2hjvKSz1Y3xwm01GrSRYKfDEWFneLQ/s640/P1050424.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The new rear panel, a new bumper and rubber strip mounted, perfect straight lines...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiB2i8w0FMALaJeXT1REH3EGK7IstTagFmVj9ev31AOgUhwyOHP_qnQxdlAomKTegEu0sj26-lEjX-oDYF1vV8DQNUsEW37Dsc_O_jLhjo6iqQ2giXqUby2fWFW2_FpB2jLNXOkjEHpmoQ/s1600/P1050427.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiB2i8w0FMALaJeXT1REH3EGK7IstTagFmVj9ev31AOgUhwyOHP_qnQxdlAomKTegEu0sj26-lEjX-oDYF1vV8DQNUsEW37Dsc_O_jLhjo6iqQ2giXqUby2fWFW2_FpB2jLNXOkjEHpmoQ/s640/P1050427.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The PORSCHE decal and the 944 badge will be added soon. I think I will use some vinyl to black out the area between the rear lights - as it has been before the repair:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
On the inside:<br />

<br />
I already started re-assembly. To affix the carpet on the sides of the trunk, Porsche uses some plastic clips which wear out when you remove them. I found a neat little 2-piece clip which works perfect:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5MY1DxP2cGoUxL-QeFQWXxPOCWdDzVB5rYMnrT1a8AjWKqxPrmc_3JCntV5jO2FFT3h7FyfvEiL8FRALzykk1jTPxYu9v0nv3L-Ln-kgI4Q-QSbK1JzJIDFtxPEt5wh0BwbN8jMAeZ2c/s1600/P1050419.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5MY1DxP2cGoUxL-QeFQWXxPOCWdDzVB5rYMnrT1a8AjWKqxPrmc_3JCntV5jO2FFT3h7FyfvEiL8FRALzykk1jTPxYu9v0nv3L-Ln-kgI4Q-QSbK1JzJIDFtxPEt5wh0BwbN8jMAeZ2c/s640/P1050419.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>

<br />
You can easily push the centerpiece in, so the legs of the clip spread out, when you pull the pin out again, the clip can be removed without any damage.<br />

They come in a box of 6, for ~6€. the only thing I hate about them: They are originally from a French car... Everybody who knows me, knows that I am not really the biggest fan of French vehicles...<br />

In the meantime the insurance issues are almost fully solved, so I started the dismantling. What I found was not so nice!<br />
To make sure the Strosek bumper will fit properly, it was glass-fibered onto the metal and the paint was removed, so the bumper was laminated onto raw metal. Apparently the whole area wasn't 100% water proof, so, over the years water entered those areas and did a good job! <br />

<br />
Obviously, this panel has to be replaced! I contacted my local Porsche dealer just to learn this specific panel is NLA!(no longer available). I searched the internet and found a British company which advertised this panel (for crazy amounts of money) - but it was my only chance, So I ordered online and tranferred my hard earned money - The next day the company replied: Sorry this part is NLA, we will refund your money!<br />
<br />
Now I was screwed - how to repair the body without the proper panel? Just by chance I browsed ebay.de and - believe it or not, exactly this panel was in an auction, ending 3 days from there. I entered a bid in the last second and luckily (again) I was the only bidder and got it for a reasonable price.<br />
Today it arrived and I have to say that I am well chuffed, it is dent free and was shipped in a lot of protective material - see for yourself:<br />

I had several issues with the front struts, there were knocking noises which I fixed after several removal and assembly sessions.<br />
<br />
Last weekend I installed the stainless Dansk exhaust. This is the old, tired exhaust (I know the heat shield needs some work, as well as the diff housing...)<br />

The damage is severe, luckily I got away with a little shock and some neck and headache! I hope all goes well with the insurance. The sad part is, that the vehicle was damage free for 31 years!Volkswrencherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03558501978179773996noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7656965393415999628.post-72529510225392730492017-09-23T12:02:00.003+02:002017-09-23T12:04:06.413+02:00lowering job, part oneWhen I visited the Sommerfest of Mittelmotor recently, I bought a set of lowering springs with TÜV certificate which I installed yesterday. The ride is not more firm, still comfortable. This is the comparison between the og Porsche springs and the new, progressive wound springs:<br />

Lately I found out that the housing of this cooler was leaking, leaving a small puddle of oil wherever I parked. This is not only bad for the environment, I personally hate these things!<br />
<br />
Thanks to Youtube, there are countless tutorials how to repair this. The new seals + some special sealant weren't that expensive, but it was quiet a job!<br />
You have to drain the oil and the coolant and the housing is in a not too easy to reach area, directly under the exhaust manifold !<br />
On the bright side, none of the screws gave me a hard time, they all could be broke loose without drama! <br />Upon disassembly I found some issues, this repair had been done before, but poorly executed:<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMFcX-KiFt4ivIN8rN9_VFeegI-GbtHoF9rGO0fUb6Nm2IC1kMV2d3aXOEOOSDFQGp6-urVobPi13lsEDw6gDGXL5kvSVHfQEo8SvZ04nC7doVNEqwRaQQ0j1aEzVSZE-SEiR23leQstE/s1600/P1050382.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMFcX-KiFt4ivIN8rN9_VFeegI-GbtHoF9rGO0fUb6Nm2IC1kMV2d3aXOEOOSDFQGp6-urVobPi13lsEDw6gDGXL5kvSVHfQEo8SvZ04nC7doVNEqwRaQQ0j1aEzVSZE-SEiR23leQstE/s640/P1050382.JPG" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />The seal wasn't placed correctly.
<br />
Also, there were 3 shims under this seal - which -at this time- I thought was a failure... because usually, only 1 or 2 are being used<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhs8fsVGLonfyBubObajDVI8t-fgmHdJMdPantQf1ASR4JJ2AgeBT58V1ZFlhgIbd4lc3kO6FUzGlHMoI8HOvOLb4Q_8RKabiaE53aAzLRX2izPy8vahJTYGHWRuaJ5VDktuMDEZW3fZvo/s1600/P1050384.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhs8fsVGLonfyBubObajDVI8t-fgmHdJMdPantQf1ASR4JJ2AgeBT58V1ZFlhgIbd4lc3kO6FUzGlHMoI8HOvOLb4Q_8RKabiaE53aAzLRX2izPy8vahJTYGHWRuaJ5VDktuMDEZW3fZvo/s640/P1050384.JPG" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />During assembly I measured the height from the sealing surface to the deck of the housing. The allowed dimension is 0,0 - 0,25 mm gap. I also had to install 3 shims in order to meet this spec.<br />
This is the situation without any shims - a big gap:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhw6ThvaLZR2FVodXlB2iQL5_6XRRhb3xiSvU_H6xIHl9VtnY5Y-ToJ5b1tKQpyazR7Jm-gJxAIHULBp3w8R2VOm-Ptas0ncvMBXqo5tAxKAilirYNskF1wXBq3GreHXUKXvmH0nSYaz0/s1600/P1050389.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhw6ThvaLZR2FVodXlB2iQL5_6XRRhb3xiSvU_H6xIHl9VtnY5Y-ToJ5b1tKQpyazR7Jm-gJxAIHULBp3w8R2VOm-Ptas0ncvMBXqo5tAxKAilirYNskF1wXBq3GreHXUKXvmH0nSYaz0/s640/P1050389.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
After I cleaned all parts and their sealing surfaces...<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRj0mSzni8sGKqvFLzy0oK4E0nD77akZLYT_wV65WyGX0eQHFn0UC1Au_l7iUOTThhN-F0ervuAEK2e_T_B4M7oOmUQwX50ohQrByVnEIL3El5tbylgbvgBUFD_M42aALnBbZrqE_bYy4/s1600/P1050386.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRj0mSzni8sGKqvFLzy0oK4E0nD77akZLYT_wV65WyGX0eQHFn0UC1Au_l7iUOTThhN-F0ervuAEK2e_T_B4M7oOmUQwX50ohQrByVnEIL3El5tbylgbvgBUFD_M42aALnBbZrqE_bYy4/s640/P1050386.JPG" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
... I used the Curil-T sealant which Porsche recommends here prior assembly of the seal itself:<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigakE2XGVtSioSR2GV-XLD-n5gV7hGlp_tw1rVYLvozqVXN9LyvHpM405e_FkjAwy-0z0qAox1OCopgbAp-OekKoxW2QY1M5e47_LLfJiAycBjl1dkxkh_OfcP0ecjXRQWsPMKPCF0XMs/s1600/P1050390.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigakE2XGVtSioSR2GV-XLD-n5gV7hGlp_tw1rVYLvozqVXN9LyvHpM405e_FkjAwy-0z0qAox1OCopgbAp-OekKoxW2QY1M5e47_LLfJiAycBjl1dkxkh_OfcP0ecjXRQWsPMKPCF0XMs/s640/P1050390.JPG" width="640" /></a><br />
During assembly a special tool is required to align the housing to the engine block in order to allow the oil pressure relief valve to work without issues!<br />
<br />
Now everything is back together and appears to be oil tight - actually for the first time since I own the Porsche it is leak free (knock on wood!) - at least: oil leak free...<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyvb2VPlrVNAq7bNos2D8_UoTFaDlSuVie9tY4-Xa9IRvPKK-s__PDFl6tMbNDRT3Vn5RKfqJ-G6zC_t66IZ2yX6Tf9neVO3ylVv4ZxAj0BnRmT3KKS-EVmAwHnVM152ZrxRl7bpPbuCE/s1600/P1050393.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyvb2VPlrVNAq7bNos2D8_UoTFaDlSuVie9tY4-Xa9IRvPKK-s__PDFl6tMbNDRT3Vn5RKfqJ-G6zC_t66IZ2yX6Tf9neVO3ylVv4ZxAj0BnRmT3KKS-EVmAwHnVM152ZrxRl7bpPbuCE/s640/P1050393.JPG" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />Because, the next issue is already found: The right quarter windows seal is leaking:<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfu4QYk-XRkVtv0dc7mfI0vwcSGIVMSkFNMJGGRLuzXzy-UOY2xbdbWUIjvZdtFen3ZzyAigHBPtZrSUDcdO63XEJlYWUXlAwL6Yaa-x5nKLagmOJbxEp5yBggx56TfZIUnmIBDR98cnU/s1600/20170819_100623.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfu4QYk-XRkVtv0dc7mfI0vwcSGIVMSkFNMJGGRLuzXzy-UOY2xbdbWUIjvZdtFen3ZzyAigHBPtZrSUDcdO63XEJlYWUXlAwL6Yaa-x5nKLagmOJbxEp5yBggx56TfZIUnmIBDR98cnU/s640/20170819_100623.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />

The rubber grommet between the brake booster and the check valve leaked a bit of air. Upon closer inspection I also discovered another bodge of a previous owner. Apparently somebody broke off the little tube on the forward end of the valve and sort of glued the hose onto the valve housing:<br />
The old check valve: <br />

When I polished the old paint the first time, I didn't seal the surface afterwards, no wax, no sealant at all. So the dirt had a nice open surface to creap into it. It looked really terrible after a while, but today I washed, clayed, polished and waxed the paint, now it is all good again:<br />

At that time no dictionary gave the information what horny meant...<br />
Now I am a little wiser :-)<br />
Unfortunately, this horn wasn't able to honk anymore:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8kUkDe4Lx36veXOCS1MYHa5R0uylkDjrK1Rx8PrdKY3orm-LxFxY5b6z1XG8669l9H1PmOUV9iTU8RRYUh_h47seTo3XdEuR-QabQtuVBFquBYQjqk0T9LcmHqhTHAWllD96UzcvnpVk/s1600/20170424_191043.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8kUkDe4Lx36veXOCS1MYHa5R0uylkDjrK1Rx8PrdKY3orm-LxFxY5b6z1XG8669l9H1PmOUV9iTU8RRYUh_h47seTo3XdEuR-QabQtuVBFquBYQjqk0T9LcmHqhTHAWllD96UzcvnpVk/s640/20170424_191043.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgE-eczf5Pwi3KgFE9sNQEyU0ZoXilZmLIqR-pwgXfwQzSID3iIg9tcIllbtdYMgWtU9nZVLbDAJlDw43RQOhvCSSOjCypIln08Rh74oQAAK_aR5KAiOS5CgctGH6gPapi9gvMS_MaEI4M/s1600/20170424_191100.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgE-eczf5Pwi3KgFE9sNQEyU0ZoXilZmLIqR-pwgXfwQzSID3iIg9tcIllbtdYMgWtU9nZVLbDAJlDw43RQOhvCSSOjCypIln08Rh74oQAAK_aR5KAiOS5CgctGH6gPapi9gvMS_MaEI4M/s640/20170424_191100.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
Luckily, the Porsche has 2 horns. But the other horn had a loose connection, resulting in no noise at all when I hit the button. The other horn is reconnected now. Because sometimes you need to honk - for different reasons ;-)Volkswrencherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03558501978179773996noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7656965393415999628.post-65764978689567614382017-04-18T21:17:00.002+02:002017-04-18T21:17:12.505+02:00Registration done!After 1,5 years, the 944 is finally on back on the streets again!<br />

Mechanically, I am sure it will pass with no issues, but things like catalytic converter function - I am not so sure about...<br />
While I prepared all paper work (which is a lot in Germany) I briefly checked the details of the Momo steering wheel technical data sheet. I always overlooked the little numbers which describe specific details for each vehicle. In paragraph 5 it says - only with excentric adapter!<br />
Well, I did not install one, but luckily, company Sandtler, which is a leading expert in motorsport equipment in Germany is just around the corner. So, I hopped in my daily driver and picked one up:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi05_Gg-vup74Kw9mYnlpSLCDdYaDc2mOpmkkV3VdK2hgjH-mIsY1gGAA1aaupeX2A_oiBcc_UYFNtj8Nq90r6sgCwasUVbd3SqbTV-ZTTDGDOo6MdCP0ivTHrbES2iknl0yoVd3QSh57k/s1600/P1050292.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi05_Gg-vup74Kw9mYnlpSLCDdYaDc2mOpmkkV3VdK2hgjH-mIsY1gGAA1aaupeX2A_oiBcc_UYFNtj8Nq90r6sgCwasUVbd3SqbTV-ZTTDGDOo6MdCP0ivTHrbES2iknl0yoVd3QSh57k/s640/P1050292.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
I will awake the Porsche from hibernation today, hope it starts and prepare the last details for tommorows check - wish me luck! Volkswrencherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03558501978179773996noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7656965393415999628.post-56461584037653328862017-02-03T18:48:00.001+01:002017-02-03T19:11:07.810+01:00DME Relay failure / hood lifterToday I was haunted by the DME relay failure - a common problem on old Porsches. The car won't start! As usual - exactly when I have no time...<br />
But there was no way around it. The Porsche has to leave the garage to make room for more important work. So, out with the relay and a "breadboard" test on the table: <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizA8-NIK92vP33d5C9CCT3dBcNFFRZBsc9MhaXFPWHEX5vvnfKnk1rX7Yk__t5aRfTrgLLPkU5542ts-8Vqy1IBfctoCfh-a5CdRd98mVDDi9L3Eoov3OP8G-8lnlHPUjiKiex2o1BHHk/s1600/20170203_174411.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizA8-NIK92vP33d5C9CCT3dBcNFFRZBsc9MhaXFPWHEX5vvnfKnk1rX7Yk__t5aRfTrgLLPkU5542ts-8Vqy1IBfctoCfh-a5CdRd98mVDDi9L3Eoov3OP8G-8lnlHPUjiKiex2o1BHHk/s640/20170203_174411.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
A 12V power source ( in this case 11,1 V - but good enough for that job) a few jumper cables and an Ohmmeter. That is all it takes to check the status of the relay. The clipped-on cap is easy to remove, then there is a good description on <a href="http://www.clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/fuel-05.htm">clarks garage</a> how to measure resistance. One circuit was dead. According to the experts, usually it helps to re-solder all joints. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwHijpHypoPJLNhOblifdSVex-O_RKzu9Z2VP0SsaeZbYo2x7HTiW58JJcBw4sKGGwxJehYuaPtiTqxQ0fplltZqOz6HUV4cebxCMlUBVn6XanRoRRCU3W3aIZ3Ait84ZNViG9XWJi0dc/s1600/20170203_180225.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwHijpHypoPJLNhOblifdSVex-O_RKzu9Z2VP0SsaeZbYo2x7HTiW58JJcBw4sKGGwxJehYuaPtiTqxQ0fplltZqOz6HUV4cebxCMlUBVn6XanRoRRCU3W3aIZ3Ait84ZNViG9XWJi0dc/s640/20170203_180225.jpg" width="360" /></a></div>
A few blobs of solder later and the car started right away - result!<br />
But as you can see, the contact pins have seen better days, so I ordered a new relay. It will rest in my glovebox - just in case...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg15YoeAdLlqCsjIOz2M1YV_pyrZyspw_-gjPp_lFbfbO7EH7m4tjwQIxEK0vpNMHwyQARhjQCAOuwqvCam1k74waCwVlGTu1ahxNufymv_faiZ9DMsqBP825B5f9LZPVybVrUcE7fJHWE/s1600/20170203_180255.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg15YoeAdLlqCsjIOz2M1YV_pyrZyspw_-gjPp_lFbfbO7EH7m4tjwQIxEK0vpNMHwyQARhjQCAOuwqvCam1k74waCwVlGTu1ahxNufymv_faiZ9DMsqBP825B5f9LZPVybVrUcE7fJHWE/s640/20170203_180255.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
The contact pins almost look burned - there is a lot of constant load on those during operation - which is basically as soon as the car starts or runs!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Just minutes before I also installed new hood lifters, as the old ones were a little tired, of course I chose OEM quality for the replacement parts:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivPAiBtGyZVIrxDOiMeGwIzSwLjJIyxLtIZ6ouaQ83SFc550yIgU9sSe1LqSSHXQQnde1wQFhCQYp_RZ33aPalEs5RmBy5StxRfn54yGmKN4c9Euk5EDtAv8RDHpLJ0ZWI8TOgmv6Kt6E/s1600/P1050190.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivPAiBtGyZVIrxDOiMeGwIzSwLjJIyxLtIZ6ouaQ83SFc550yIgU9sSe1LqSSHXQQnde1wQFhCQYp_RZ33aPalEs5RmBy5StxRfn54yGmKN4c9Euk5EDtAv8RDHpLJ0ZWI8TOgmv6Kt6E/s640/P1050190.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A 5 minute job and only 23,80€ invested, but worth the effort. Now the hood will stay up any time.</div>

<h2>
<a href="http://www.oldtimertreff-ruhr.de/3/termine_2017.html">Termine 2017 - leider anders als gewohnt</a></h2>
<br />
4 Treffen
haben!<br />
Fest stehen, die Termine 19. März, 16. April, 18.

Usually I buy German quality tools and also some Snap On, Craftsman (not so much any more) and some other quality brands. Just lately, while browsing through one of my favorite <a href="http://www.garagejournal.com/">forums</a> I stumbled across a company from Korea which provides great tools for great prices. Even better, there is a German distributor for this brand. The company is called Toptul. The prices are ridiculous cheap and the quality is stunning:<br />

I like the double ring wrenches with the 45° offset. And you can't have enough extensions! The neat little 1/4 inch ratchet has 60 teeth! The only thing I don't like is the fact that they offer different surfaces (mirror polished; satin chrome) and you cannot chose which one will be delivered... First I tidied up the trunk and carpet, then I added a luggage net to prevent the "junk in the trunk" from moving all over the place:<br />

I also added a nice set of floor mats. On the left you might see a very bright light. I replaced the old 12V filament bulbs of the interior and dome lights with LED ones. This is a huge improvement in lumination!</div>

Can't wait to get this thing back on the roads!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Note to myself: Don't forget to replace the hatch seal!</div>

The stamped steel bowl is freshly media blasted and cad plated.<br />
To me, this is important - even though I don't even smoke, but the looks of this thing make me happy:<br />
